is it just me, or is the first one look too saturated?

Just the really cartoony bright(est) red areas, contrasting with black so suddenly...really threw me off.

I suggest reading the big tutorial. It's not telling you how to make it. It's just teaching you lighting tips. It's the type of thing you'd learn in an advanced art class, nothing wrong with it.
