beginning of a sketch

This is the first stage of a sketch for something that I'm going to try to paint. Please help me out now, especially to make sure I have the proportions of the face right. I don't want to actually get into painting and then realize that I need to change the sketch.

Thanks.

It looks alright as it is. If you want to be picky about it, I would say his ears look a little too high on his head (but I think you have his head tilted downward, so if that's what you're going for then it's not a problem), and his mouth/chin is a little small compared to the rest of his head. A good rule to go by when drawing the mouth is that the left and right edges of the lips should line up vertically with the middle of the eyes.

agreed, are his eyes open, or closed? because if they are closed it will look better than wide open.

His head is tilted downwards yeah, but the ears are probably still too high even for that. And his eyes are supposed to be closed actually. Given that its tilted downward should I still make the chin a little wider and bring the edge of the lips out farther? I'll try to fix that and post again later.

Broadened the chin a bit and extended the edge of the lips, made his eyes more obviously closed, darkened some lines, fleshed out the hair a little.

Should the chin be broader at all? I'm not any sort of perspective master but I'm figuring that the guidelines for his lips will slant in towards the center if his head is tilted down. Is that overdone though?

it looks good, but now his eyes look like they are open because of where his eyelashes are.

The things on the top are shadows. That'll be more clear when I start painting.

If his neck is that muscular then he's probably going to have a little more bulge around his elbows.

This obviously isn't anywhere near done yet, but here's an update at least. By the way, you can't see it in this picture but I did fix the elbow Macman.

Hrm. Where does it say anything about spelling?

Argue semantics if you wish. I'm allowed to spell stuff wrong, as long as it's intentional. Gawd, I mean, 99% of everything else I spell is right.

CB you fucking rock my socks. In a good way. You probably have an idea of what you want this to look like, so I don't want to try and change your intent, but I'll give my two cents.

Right now you've got one color down, and I can't tell if you're going to make this monochromatic or if that's just a base color. If you go for monochrome, that will probably look great for his expression. I originally wanted "Portrait of a Man" to be totally blue, but instead of painting it blue from the start, I painted it normally and then adjusted colors later and decided I didn't like it. You might consider doing that, it will give you a couple colorings to choose from, and if you go for monochrome, the tones and stuff will probably end up a lot more accurate.

If you're going to go a little crazy with the colors, though, you could try something I haven't really done much myself. Where you might have a dark, dark shadow, go ahead and throw in a little deep purple, and some light reds or neon blues to really bright spots. I know you're probably inclined to just paint the colors you see, but in reality the colors you see are just a big mixture of a whole bunch of other colors. Putting colors where you think they might not belong isn't necessarily such a bad idea. Like on a jaw with a hard shadow, a faint streak of purple next to (but a little distanced from) the edge of the jaw gives a great effect of volume. (I don't really have any examples to show you, but I think you might know what I'm talking about.)

(You can do some really cool stuff with color... I once saw a guy paint a portrait where every brush stroke was a different color, but when you converted the portrait to grayscale, it looked like a flawless black and white photograph... shit like that is just amazing...)

But really, just paint this however you want to. I'm just saying all this stuff because I'm excited someone else is actually doing something like this, that doesn't mean you have to listen to me. Go at your own pace, do what you want to do, make it look like what YOU want it to look like.

Yeah, I'm going monochromatic on this for a couple reasons. First, I think it will give me a better impact for the final piece (Yeah, I've got a pretty clear idea where I'm going). Second, I just don't feel like I'm ready to do anything to impressionistic. This is mainly a piece to figure out what I can do and what I need to work on.

I'm pretty much saving WIP pictures every time I add something new, so I'll keep posting as I keep working. And thanks for the encouragement.

Probably the last wip before I'm done painting and add some finishing touches. The next update should be in the showcase in a couple weeks.
