By that I mean I made the pose without reference.

Thats great so far. Needs more shading though, unless you color it, which you should!.

you should deffinately color it, cause its a kick ass picture.

put it into photoshop, make two layers. one named drawing and the other paint. then put your image onto the drawing layers and set the layers mode to screen.... (foregot what the lil window under the layer window called with the darken,lighten, harden, soften, saturation and things like that are called .) then apply the color on the painting layer which should be under the drawing and use the burn and lighten tools to created highlights and shoadows. we had to do this for class...imma try and post the picture i had to color

using burn tool and dodge tool to make "hilights and shadows" is for nubcakes.
what you should do is make a color weel, with a base, one darker/lighter and then a second set of darker/lighter colors.

and then use dodge and burn for after effects.
