If you're going to take macro, use a tripod or something else to stabilize it.

Because at 8 megapixels I know you can get more focus than that.

6 vs 8 mp does things on a small basis that it's pretty much useless for you. Also being a point and shoot...

Good job wasting money. Go trade it for a d50 or a d70 or a d100 and get a nise lens

THAT is absolutely correct.
We currently have a Canon Powershot Pro1 that is sitting in the shop and wont be repaired because it would cost 500 smackers. Hopefully I will be able to take this to college with me and use it when the lens does not malfunction. This will allow me to buy a 8mm video camera and maybe another 35mm camera.
So within the next day or two we should (most likely) have a used 6.2 Megapixel Canon Rebel EOS XT and a 18-55mm zoom lens (AF) for $550 total or a new camera of the same make, model, and lens but with 8.2 megapixels. That will be $850.
We'll see what the dad wants to spend.

photo-touchups please. like ctrl-u it, drop the saturation to -30, then ctrl-u again and make it +30. word, and then sharpen some spots.

so it turns out that we will probably get a canon A700. not bad.

anyway, for the macro stuff, im guessing that it is using the zoom to get so close. the rule for holding the camera in your hand and not blurring the photo is that the denominator of the shutter speed should be equal to or greater than the focal length. that may help you out on your lack of total focus on those close-up shots.
