Behavior at concerts?

So, the last concert I went to was a Grateful Dead concert, around 11 years ago, only a year before the band split up. (*cries*)

And now, The Flaming Lips are performing a FREE (!!!) concert here in Gainesville, in the SAME place, and uh... basically, I don't know concert etitiquete.

I know it's not that gay mosh shit, since it's not that type of music. But it will be quite crowded there (the aacebook group for it alone has over 2,500 people going, and that's HS and college peoples only).

So I just don't know what it's like to be at a concert. It's outdoors, and with probably some 3,000 people, it'll be packed. And me and my friends are getting their really early to get good seats (which I'm sure a bunch more will probably do also, but we're getting there like 7 hours early...). So probably just standing room only (hopefully I won't get lost... :S)

So what do you do? Just stand around, listening to The Rapture (is this even a good band?), and then The Flaming Lips for 4 hours?

Oh, and fuck, I PRAY TO GOD that Coyne goes out in the inflatable ball...

Oh, and fuck, I PRAY TO GOD that Coyne goes out in the inflatable ball...

things the Flaming Lips do:

-coyne with his inflatable ball
-a billion pounds of confetti
-coyne with giant plastic hands
-animal suits
-camera to coyne's microphone that feeds to a giant TV behind him
-colorful rubber balls
-they've recently done a thing where they give everyone laser pointers and everyone points it at coyne, who holds a mirror. I don't know if they'll do that though
-flashlights + fog
-people in santa claus or other outrageous suits
-coyne spinning a giant light around
-disco bawls

the shit they do is usually for a certain song. like the hands are for She Don't Use Jelly and the light is for Race For The Prize. so there's no guarantee they'll do all of it.

proper Flaming Lips etiquette = be energetic or be on drugs. the band members don't do drugs, and I wasn't on drugs when I saw them, but I heard it's terrific.

and the Rapture is a good band

Re: Behavior at concerts?

I mean.

General show etiquette is to stand and watch and sing along maybe give a few fists in the air.

And yeah, be energetic, nothing is worse then seeing a bunch of standing people be bored and not do anything.

Two general rules for you.

1) Don't be a douche.

2) Don't quote Mitch Hedberg to try to impress a girl who already likes you.

Re: Behavior at concerts?

hallucinogens are better for Flaming Lips concerts. but hey, it isn't like 3 or 4 bowls of purple isn't a hallucinogen. (though you'd probably be too out of it to enjoy the concert)

EDIT- one guy told me he went to a concert completely stoned off weed, with PCP and LSD and all that shit. he said he was doing frogstroke (swimming) motions on the ground where the crowd was. because he was wearing a shirt of a british flag, he jumped on a car and screamed "YOU CANNOT HURT ME, I AM BRITISH!" at which point the police seized him, and told them that he drank an open can of beer and was free to go.

Topics like these that spark discussion should be in the discussion lounge fools.

Concerts are great. Especially loud rock concerts when you've been drinking. Drink lots of water for sure if your going to go to the pit, and get ready to get tossed around.

Re: Behavior at concerts?

I think you're working yourself up for more than this is worth. Last night a underground metal group came to my college called Black Glass. I was also a little unsure with what I had to do, me not going being a big fan of concert going and such. Fortunately, I was there with four other of my friends to see this performance. The group was very good. They played everything from metallica to ac dc to sweet child of mine by Guns N Roses. Soon enough, after observing for a few seconds on the mood of the stage, I just jumped in. The musicians were standing on basically this minuscule stage just several feet from everyone else, so I need we had to make this concert intimate. Me and my friends transitioned from claps to some crazy head banging on the fast parts. Besides the fact that half were either high or drunk, it was one hell of a night. The fact is, you just have to understand the mood of whats being played. Obviously you're not going to slam dance to Alanis Morrisette with a bunch of forty year old pregnant mom's. If you see other kids jumping up and down, this is where you have to join them. The whole reason you're there is to have fun, as those kids are. Don't fear rejection man. During the jam at my school, we and my friends started little mini moshes just for the hell of it.

I know one thing is for sure, when you get to the concert, everyone there is almost always anti-social and wannabe hardcore. They act as if they are the only individual on earth and when you talk to them, minutes before the concert actually begins, they talk to you like a fucking serial killer. Just loosen up when you're around people, talk about the music and how you were introduced to it.

Don't forget to have fun.

me myself, I wasn't. since I don't like drugs personally (not against people who take them though, I just don't do drugs for personal reasons, even though I COULD get any type of drug for free...)

and alchohal is a drug.
and the one thing I refuse to do flatout (again, personal reasons, but anyone who knows my history can figure why)

Oh, and I was stuck with 5 stoners for like, two hours straight waiting, so now I smell like so much weed, and even the shower hasn't made it go away all the way.

And the show was fucking amazing.

I know that Steven Drozd doesn't like those concerts as much as Wayne does. Steven's also making a band with the Balming Lips' tour drummer.

as for Michael, he's just kinda stiff.

P.S. I saw Ego Tripping and you didn't!
their Bohemian Rhapsody cover was really good too

Re: Behavior at concerts?

Yeah, totally agree with you on those comments. They did like nothing, but it was Wayne going fucking crazy. He had to have said, "Fuck Bush!" like at least 10 times in the 1.5 hour span.

P.S.P. - Fuck you!
their Kashmir cover was really good too. and totally unexpected since I hadn't heard them do it before actually.

Re: Behavior at concerts?

Oh, and I forgot to mention they covered Taps, which intro'd into Waitin' for a Superman, which was probably my 3rd favorite event of the night.

It was actually kinda fucking emotional.

Oh, and She Don't Use Jelly had EVERYONE fucking flipping out.

Ohx2, the crowd fucking sucked because it had so many people who weren't fans, as it was a free concert. Just charge $5, and easily 400 less people woulda been there. (there was like, 3k probably?)
Only thing it had going for it was it's sheer size (at least for Gainesville?), but other than that, they weren't that energetic. Hardly anyone singing (Coyne had to stop three times to tell them to "sing motherfuckers!") and even the people dressed up were dancing lamely (then again, they weren't random concert attendees, but rather Coyne's nephew's band who was a shitty opening act before The Rapture, who was fucking excellent btw)

Ratatat played here a little while back, didn't go because I think it's a boring band, to be quite honest!
