Scheduled Downtime - Mon, May 19th

The host is upgrading are server configuration on Monday, the 19th, so there will be a brief period of downtime lasting anywhere from 2-9 hours. So, if the site becomes unreachable during this time, that is why.

The new server will provide us with faster response times, a faster internet connection, and a better all around server. I can't wait, and i'm glad the host is making this change.

Re: Scheduled Downtime - Mon, May 19th

I do not like how the front page is for some contest no one cares about.

I don't know what I want, but a once-a-month update to the front page makes the site nothing but tutorials no one looks at anymore, and forums no one but a select few use anymore.

In the future, what can we expect to actually, you know, pull people into the site from just one glance? Since they're not likely to check the forums first, and the tutorials themselves aren't directly there in your face. It isn't just the content that's lacking from the site then, but rather a lack of presentation. Sure, you're spiffing it all up with a new layout, but that driving force that just draws one into a site isn't there now.
Gametrailers had movies on it's front page. Deviantart has art from its users. NationalSigLeague has constantly updated news about its site and what's happening. Not just some lame shoutout about some downtime that will only affect maybe the three users who are active at that time.
See where your main group of consistently posting forum users came from. They came in groups, or as friends. Very few were attracted uniquely on their own, or stayed as such. See where they came from, and how they were attracted there. See the differences between those areas, and how you can use positives to pull this place together.
I think this issue needs to be addressed.

But I'm just rambling and typed that up within two minutes. I talk eloquently out of my ass.

Bit, your right the front page does not show our content, rather just a site news blog type thing. This WILL change, and i appreciate the input

When the new system is in place, it will show articles, tutorials, and other content listed on the home page, very similar to how PSDTUTS - Photoshop Tutorials and Links - Spoonfed Photoshop Tutorials / Smashing Magazine and A List Apart: A List Apart do it.

Re: Scheduled Downtime - Mon, May 19th

Have you ever thought of gaining uh.. support from other tut sites, to just borrow their tuts and show on our site? Maybe with a referral link at the bottom? And they can use the same system with our tuts. And then we can get some more tuts easily, and after enough time, and traffic, you'd be able to cut off the system and be self-sufficient at that point?

Or is that just too much hassle also? I know you do have Affiliates as is, but I haven't seen that help much yet as is, so yeah.

Re: Scheduled Downtime - Mon, May 19th

google drops your rank for duplicate content... so borrowing tutorials isn't really a good idea for organic traffic. Link backs are great for traffic, for getting your site noticed, and for getting better ranks in search engines. But a great way to earn link backs is to write quality content, or to be guest writers for other sites. Meaning, to create an article and sound like an expert at it, and have it published elsewhere. Usually the content publisher will allow a link back to the article creator's site, which helps establish the site.

We do have traffic, although it has dropped from ~2 years ago, it is still relatively strong considering the lack of new content (besides the forums), since that time.

And traffic is up from jan when we switched to the new ver. Loosing lots of indexed content and some links broke during the process.

A new publishing system will address these issues. Better front page content, better layout, more organized sitemap, and hopefully a better community feel, with a comment system and maybe more.

Re: Scheduled Downtime - Mon, May 19th

I didn't mean for the purpose of hits through google, I just meant so it looked like we had more tutorials than we did.

You know, so it wasn't like you could just go through every tut in less than a day.

But I see what you mean. I was just curious. All that technical shit you're talking about sound spiffy.

(I love how you switched to the formal admin)

EDIT: I want to buy more drugs too!
